Saturday at the Quilt Museum - Red and White Quilts, Part 1

Equal time for Red and White Quilts, right?  I've indulged my love of blue, now it's time for red!

Red & White Spools
1870-1890

I thought I'd start with this one, since we all probably use spools daily!  No information other than the above.  I couldn't find it in the Quilt Index, though it was found there at some point.

Sawtooth Baskets
New York
1890
80 x 102

Fun treatment of a basket block!  I like the simple flowers on the alternate blocks and her use of emblems in the setting triangles.

Red Pine Tree
Pennsylvania
1890

I've posted this one before, but I think it bears repeating.  The fabric used gives such a fun depth to the trees.

Chain and Block
1860-1880
77 x 81

I love the boldness of this one.  The blocks leap off the piece and the border makes its own statement.

I could find no more information on it.

Feathered Star with Bow Swags

No information on this one, either, but I like a number of things about it.  The formation of another design in the center of the star blocks is really cool.  And I like how the half-square triangles make sashing that resembles ribbon.

Next week we'll keep going with red and white.  See you then!

Happy Quilting!

PLEASE NOTE:
- I am not a quilt historian.  I simply enjoy finding interesting quilts and sharing them with you!

  1. I've been 'collecting' pieces in a storage container to use for a red/white based quilt. Just haven't ever laid out things to see if I have 'enough', yet....maybe I should do that. I'll be interested to see what you share next - always good for 'inspiration'! :-) thanks!

  2. My favorites are the basket and the chain and block. I've never seen a basket quilt where the blocks were turned like that. It gives it a really interesting look, as do the simple flower appliques. I may have to try that one some time!
