Isn't this unusual?  I don't think I've ever seen a basket quilt done in orange!

This one is just wonderful.  The fabrics used are some I wish I could find in reproductions today.  The quilting is amazing done on a 5/8 x 5/8 grid!

I've never seen a basket quilt like this.  The alternate blocks make it look like a woven coverlet to me.  And the solitary bird just off center - I wonder if there's a story there?

Red Baskets with Appliqué Border

This one struck me because of the appliqué border.  You'll notice that the vine is not consistent in color all the way around.  Fading?  In any case, it's cheerful!

Saturday at the Quilt Museum - Basket Quilts, Part 1

I love basket quilts. I've made myself one and am in the process of designing another.  For the next couple of weeks, let's take a look at some from the 19th century.  They are many and varied!


Red and Green Baskets

This is the first one that caught my eye as I was perusing Pinterest.  I like the way she alternated the tilt of the baskets so the quilt can be oriented in any direction.  Interestingly, there are blue quilting lines still on the top, though it is well quilted and laundered.  I wonder what happened there?

Unusual Set Baskets

This one caught my eye because of the unusual set and cute border treatment.  I don't think I've ever seen a basket quilt done this way.  It appeals to my symmetrical streak!  And her use of color is fun.

Red, white and blue are always favorites of mine and I like what the quiltmaker did with this one!

Saturday at the Quilt Museum - Burgoyne Surrounded

Burgoyne Surrounded quilts have drawn my attention many times.  This week we'll take a look at a variety of them.  The old ones most often are done in red and white.  These are in chronological order this time.  I thought it might be fun to see them that way.

This is the oldest version of Burgoyne Surrounded that I have found.  It has an interesting story behind it.

The quilt label reads:
Presented to Rev. Wm. Roberts & Lady
by the ?????? Missionary Sewing Society
of the Franklin St. M. E. Church*
Newark NJ
October 20,1846
"And all the ends of the Earth shall fear Him."

*Methodist Episcopal

The quilt was taken w/ Rev. William and Hannah Roberts when they left New Jersey for Oregon, 1846.

Martha A Page

I simply love this one!  What an awesome combination of hard edges and curves.

Isn't the border wonderful?  I think I have to use it as inspiration for something!

I can't find any further information about the quilt other than what captions it on Pinterest.  "Martha A. Page, 1852." There is a post to which it is attached on Civil War Talk, but the thread is so long, I gave up trying to find anything pertinent.  I guess we'll just have to enjoy it!

This is an interesting treatment of the pattern.  Using the flying geese sashing changes it a lot.  What do you think of it?
